Event Organizer: Cripping Up Sex
Unlocking Autonomy: Accessible Sex Ed for AAC Users & Deaf Students and Clients
Event Description: Communication is the foundation of consent, safety, and self-expression. Yet non-verbal students using AAC and Deaf or hard of hearing students are routinely left out of essential sex education. Without explicit signs or programmed vocabulary for anatomy, emotions, and boundaries, students lose the critical tools needed to express desires, report pain, or disclose abuse.
Join disability educator and advocate Evan for a practical, interactive workshop designed for educators, therapists, and administrators. You will learn how to:
Presume competence and engage directly with non-verbal and Deaf students.
Audit and program AAC systems with accurate anatomical terms, relationship language, LGBTQ+ identities, and consent phrases.
Provide Deaf students with explicit formal signs rather than relying on vague gestures or home signs.
Navigate administrative pushback and parental hesitation using rights- and safety-based frameworks.
Identify predatory grooming and fulfill mandated reporting duties while ensuring accessible communication throughout disclosures.
Equip your students with the words, signs, and agency they need to understand their bodies and navigate the world safely.
