Filmmaking 101 | How to Direct a Short

DCC Hosted

ASL | Deaf interpreter | recorded | virtual

You know that feeling when you have something to share, but you’re not sure how to do it? Maybe you need to tell your story or illuminate a community or a struggle that is dear to you. Or do you have a cast of characters that you can’t wait to introduce to the world? We have an idea! Shaina Ghuraya, filmmaker, screenwriter, and Superfest director, is hosting a two-part filmmaking micro-retreat. In part two, “How to Direct a Short Film,” Shaina will focus on how to use the components of a short film: props, costumes, lighting, sets, etc., to develop the story and convey emotion. In addition to learning hard skills in these workshops, we’ll get real about the path for disabled filmmakers and how to reframe our limitations as tools for creativity and opportunities for collaboration.

This session will include a presentation, working time, and small groups. Though we’re starting with the basics, we think this workshop will be fun and supportive for disabled filmmakers of all levels. You don’t need to attend the first session to go to the second!
