Deaf Interpreter and Access Specialist

Type: Part-time, 15-20 hours per week. Hourly. Non-exempt. One-year contract with the possibility of extension.

Compensation: $40,000 – $55,000

Benefits: This part-time position offers vacation, sick time, and a matching 401(k).

Location: In-person, San Francisco, CA

Overview:

The San Francisco Disability Cultural Center is looking for a thoughtful, detail-oriented Deaf Interpreter and Access Specialist to support our commitment to accessible, culturally affirming programming. This role focuses on event interpreting, translation of written descriptions into ASL videos, and coordinating outreach and access services that meet a broad range of needs with creativity and empathy. This is a part-time 15-20 hours per week in-person position in San Francisco. This role has regular evening and weekend needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deaf Interpretation/Translation:
    • Provide interpretation for several live events per month.
    • Translate written English into ASL and record videos.
  • Access Coordination:
    • Identify, schedule, and support culturally affirming interpreters (hearing and Deaf) and other access providers.
    • Ensure information is recorded into access contract workflow.
  • Language Justice:
    • Work closely with program staff and community members to develop creative, flexible access strategies beyond standard compliance.
    • Oversee multilingual support across programs, including language justice practices.
    • Develop partnerships and lead occasional outreach initiatives with the Bay Area Deaf community to encourage participation in DCC programming
  • Additional Tasks:
    • Helping with events and staffing of the space.
    • Data entry.
    • Greeting people, check-ins, helping with access needs, and member sign-ups.
    • Perform other related tasks as needed with the DCC team.

Qualifications:

  • Deaf Interpretation experience for diverse types of live public events.
  • Familiarity with Bay Area Deaf communities.
  • English fluency.
  • Basic video editing skills or willingness to learn.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
  • Commitment to cultural humility and language justice.
  • Creative problem-solving skills with a collaborative mindset.
  • Familiarity with accessibility practices, including working with Deaf, disabled, and multilingual communities.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Personal and professional experience with disability and past experience working with Deaf community.
